“I read; I travel; I become”

I used to consider the bookcase the most important element of my small apartment in Milan. And, as a matter of fact, it was the one element that changed the most over the the 10 years i lived there.

There are several schools of thought on the best ways to order books over the shelves: by theme, by publisher, by author… The way I personally prefer is by the date-I-finished-the-book because it gives an immediate idea of my evolving interests over time. (I still have to decide whether to put a date also on the ones I happen to abandon, which for now have a dedicated shelf) .

While reading, I underline and comment the parts that catch my attention. When I finish, I write the date and sign my name on the first page as a sort of “Mattia has been here” for whoever will come next.

I like to own the books I read. I am still trying to understand what is my feeling about e-books. I like the easier accessibility on my iPad wherever I am, the reading experience in the dark, and the easier scrolling of underlined sentences when you want to go back to them. Still I miss the note writing/drawing at the side of the text and miss the physical item on the shelves. Dilemma still to be solved!
